New modeling shows that renewable natural gas and renewable hydrogen could become key low-carbon fuels in the United States' clean energy supply. These low-carbon fuels might need to rise from virtually zero today to more than 3k tBTU by 2030 and nearly 15k tBTU by 2050. Together, low-carbon fuels might need to surpass natural gas as a fuel supply by 2040.
